Important personalities from the local history, heroes, artists appreciated throughout Italy and all over the world, whose commitment and sacrifice has been decisive for history but also for the entire country. They are remembered and represented in different parts of the city. An invitation to retrace history also through its “witnesses of time”.
GIUSEPPE SARACCO
Located in the gardens near piazza Italia, it is an honour to pay tribute to a grand Mayor and Statesman to whom Acqui owes so much. The bronze statue was designed by the sculptor Giulio Monteverde native of Bistagno just like Giuseppe Saracco.
VITTORIO EMANUELE II
Previously situated in the present piazza Italia (formerly piazza Vittorio) it was then moved to piazzetta Levi in front of the City Hall, but since 1995 it has returned back to Piazza Italia and has been worthily restored. It was designed by De Ambrogio Borgi.
MONUMENTO A GIACOMO BOVE
Giacomo Bove was an Official of the Italian Royal Navy, an explorer of the Antarctic, born in a small village called Maranzana in 1859. On board the ship Vega he explored the Antarctic with Nordenskjold (a Swedish geologist / explorer). After contracting a terrible fever during a trip to Congo, he sadly committed suicide in Verona at the age of 35. The statue is placed in the park of the Castle in front of the Railway station, and was designed by Eugenio Barone. It features the terrible struggle fought against the Nordic storms.
LA DANZATRICE / THE DANCER
An opera by Sergio Unia, a local Piedmontese artist. Known as the “Ballet dancer “ it may be admired in the City Hall’s gardens in piazza Levi, where it has been since 1978 following an exhibition held by the artist that attracted the mayor’s attention, Solicitor Raffaello Salvatore, who encouraged the Council to purchase one of his works.
CIVIC BELL TOWER
The Civic bell tower is known as the “tower without foundations” as it rests on the adjacent houses.
It once was one of the main entrances as part of the defensive walls which surrounded and protected the historic centre. It dates from the year 1.100 beginning of the 1200s. In 1763, it was transformed into a Civic Tower with the enlargement of the old entrance and the construction of the highest part hosting the campanile. The tower strongly characterizes the piazza.
THE FALLEN SOLDIERS 1915-18
The statue is situated in a fine position in the public gardens in front of the railway station.
An opera by P. Canonica that quotes in relief the famous “Victory bulletin” of the warrant office Diaz. It was inaugurated in the presence of the Prince of Piedmont Umberto of Savoy.
A MONUMENT to the PARTISANS and the RESISTENCE
Situated in the public gardens in front of the Railway station in via Alessandria, it repeatedly features in 8 idioms the famous sentence by Calamandrei “Today and always resistance – Oggi e sempre resistenza” .
MONUMENT to the FALLEN SOLDIERS of ACQUI at CEFALONIA
A respectful and honourable tribute to the holocaust in Cefalonia, Greece to the 10.000 soldiers of the “Division Acqui” that were massacred by the Germans. It is placed along Corso Bagni – passeggiata Piola and is opera of the sculptor Begonzi.
THE PRODIGAL SON
A bronze statue, a masterpiece by Arturo Martini positioned in the gardens of the “Ottolenghi” old people’s home in via Verdi.
TRIBUTE TO THE SAILOR
Situated in front of the Ariston Theatre in piazza Matteotti an expressive and meaningful statue opera by Raffaele Salvatore.
BRONZE MONUMENT TO THE FALLEN SOLDIERS OF THE 23° REGIMENT OF ARTILLERY of CAMPAGNA
Created by Gianni Remuzzi it’s located under the entryway of the ex-Caserma Cesare Battisti.
MONUMENT IN HONOUR OF THE CARABINIERE (ITALIAN POLICE )
The fountain is located in Corso Dante, and in the middle is a large stone block sculpted by the students.
It represents the sacrifice of those that during the years have decided to risk their lives at people’s service .
